A study on the taxon, Malus asiatica Nakai

Abstract
Nakai(1915) described Malus asiatica Nakai which is a cultivated apple tree since Lee dynasty.
Recently the number of apple trees has been decreasing in orchard gardens because of their economical value. The author studied their distribution, and habitat and bo-tanically detailed characteristics. The apple orchard gardens are located in the outside of Chahamun Gate and some trees are planted in the garden of old temples or villages.
The plants are in bloom from the of April to early May, and the fruits ripen during middle August.
Flower seasons and flower characteristics of Malus asiatica Nakai are similar to Malus pumila, but a very different fruiting season, fruit size, and other characteristics were observed between the taxa of Malus asiatica and Malus pumila.
The fruits of Malus asiatica Nakai are much smaller and ripen earlier than Malus pumila var. mandshurica.
The taxon of Malus asiatica Nakai grows well in shallow granite soil with a native taxon, Malus baccata.
The fruits of the plant from seedling Malus asiatica are very small and about half the size of normally cultivated taxon, Malus asiatica.
The fruits of taxon Malus baccata are similar to the fruits of the seedling plants of Malus asiatica, but are very smaller.
Usually small fruiting taxa of Malus have comparably longer petioles than the larger fruiting taxa.
It is presumed that the taxon of the presently cultivated Malus asiatica originated from the seeding form of Malus asiatica Nakai through a long breeding period in China.
